As we continue with our winter months preparedness
information, we turn to the issue of pests. Now, we are not just speaking of pests
like the persistent people trying to extend your vehicle warranty, but pests
like mice, bugs, and the like. Should you end up with a telemarketer in your
unit, a simple eviction notice should be enough to remedy this type of pest.
However, if you are trying to prevent the accumulation of mice and bugs, then
we have some helpful tips for you. As the temperatures outside continue to drop,
animals and insects begin looking for warmer places to stay. Let us try not to
make your unit their new home.
To begin with, you should never pack and store food in your
unit. As this does violate the lease at Burris Lane, it also will attract the
critters we are aiming to avoid. Pack as many of your items that will fit in
sealable, plastic or metal bins. These storage options assist by providing a
barrier that mice and bugs will have difficulty getting through and keeping
your nice blankets, clothes, and towels safe from becoming cozy little homes. Wrap
furniture and mattresses in plastic, this will help limit access to them. Wrapping
these will also help keep your items sanitary if your unit does get
infiltrated. Using shelves, or other means to keep your items off the ground
will help as well.
If you are still concerned about your belongings, then set
some traps or bait in the unit, just make sure to check them frequently. Spraying
the unit with bug spray is an option that will help protect the unit. Some
companies do offer repellant that can be placed in the unit to help with keeping
rodents away.
Remember that as you pack your items, and transport them
from one place to another, to check and ensure that you are not inadvertently bringing
along anything unwanted and sabotaging the unit from the start. At Burris Lane,
we have the property sprayed for bugs, and have bait boxes set about to help
keep your items safe.
Wrapping up these tips, as it is said, the best defense is a
good offense. So, make sure to properly prep you unit at move-in. If you have
already established yourself in the unit, taking an afternoon or a Saturday may
not be your idea of excitement, but it would be worth pulling the belongings
from your unit and ensuring their safety. The preventative measures that are taken
by the facility only go so far, so make sure that you do your part. That way
when you are unpacking at your new home, you are not welcomed by destroyed
items or unwanted guests. Those are not the housewarming gifts anybody would
want to receive.
