With winter quickly approaching, it is time to turn
attention to making sure that all your stored possessions have been properly
prepared. I know that one of the last things on your list of enthusiastic
events is to run down to the storage unit, unpack it, go through it all, then
cram it back in; but hey, we must do what we must do to keep our cherished
items safe. Therefore, I will provide you a brief list of ideas to help you
make sure your items live to see another spring.
First off, when traveling to the unit, make sure to drive
carefully and arrive at the destination. Your items will be quite lonely if you
do not make it to them. Then, if you are a bit of a procrastinator, there is a
chance that ice may already be present. Do not let this deter you, pack ice
melt to sprinkle along the path, and in front of your unit. A lighter makes a
handy way to melt any ice that may have formed in your lock, or spray ice melt
will do the trick. A nice purchase would have been a weatherproof lock to help
prevent this issue, maybe before next winter, right?
Once you get to the inside of your unit, it is important to figure
out what items are the most vulnerable. Now I realize that everything you put
in the unit is precious, but really, think logically, and focus on what could be
damaged by freezing temperatures. Here are a few ways to prep your unit for the
low temperatures. It is a good idea to keep your belongings off the ground.
Pallets are a great way to achieve this plan. Use moving blankets, and the like,
to wrap and insulate your possessions. Finally, do your best to keep all items
off the walls, and toward the center of the unit.
Things containing batteries, liquids, and wood furniture are
some quick and easy ones to recognize. Keep in mind that liquids expand when
they freeze, so this could damage the items that contain them. Certain types of
batteries also do not fair well in colder weather. Due to this, it may be best
to remove them prior to storage. The wood furniture needs to be cleaned, then
covered for storage. Some woods may even need to be oiled, so check out what
would be best for your particular piece.
There is quite a bit to do to properly prepare for the cold
weather, so don’t delay, and start early before the temps drop too low. You
want to make sure to tend to your items early before irreparable damage occurs.
This list is just a few things that can help you keep your belongings safe. Do
your research for your needs, and feel free to reach out with your questions,
we will try to help you however we can.
